An international buffet: the Kingsbury, harbour lounge

A pending post almost a month old. It was the same week we went on for dinner at the mount lavinia hotel colombo.  This time it was a sending off dinner for the same arab client but the location was different.

We reached the hotel at 8:30 pm in a rush soon after shopping at the newly opened house of fashion.  The dinner was unscheduled and was called in at 8pm.
Visiting the Kingsbury hotel and chatting over a glass of fresh orange juice at the pool side cafe it was a very fine day with heavy wind from the sea across the hotel.
The hotel was busy with security and stuff as the CHOGM day was around the corner while the delegates started arriving and were provided accommodation at the Kingsbury hotel.

The long awaited buffet

When I was first taken into dine at the Kingsbury hotel we walked over to the harbour room where the had a large selection of international cuisine lined up for a reasonable price. Walking around the buffet table I was slightly disturbed by the pork display amongst all the meat and some at the salad section. Turning away without proceeding to dine in there we were directed towards the ocean. Although pleased and really happy for the food that was available my mind was so much into the large buffet table at the restaurant next door. The vivid colours of salad and desserts aroused my appetite and was always making me wish the meals were prepared seperate and clean while I also wished the pork dint exist everyday.
The advertisements on the paper during ramazan which indicated the ramazan ifthar buffet persuaded me to trust that good must be prepared clean and well to give all muslims a chance to experience fine food buffet.
The restaurant had many muslim customers. It was time for me to try my hands on this luscious spread of food.
I bet I dint taste everything available yet I did go for the unique and original.

The lovely display of baguettes and cheese made me capture them into my phone.

I went in for some pies and the were of many varieties. I loved all I served.  The one to the left topped with dark chocolate sauce is a few pineapple pieces dipped in a batter and deep fried. Served with some chocolate fudge. Usually it is served in  a separate plate with a scoop of ice cream and some chocolate sauceon top. I was in a hurry so I served it on with all my desserts.

Srilankan food is two words and when am abroad I can get a long list of srilankan food but if am srilanka there is none that I really enjoy than the crispy hoppers. An egg in the centre is egg hoppers while a few spoons of jaggery syrup makes it jaggery hoppers.
image

the chef who made the hoppers looked a bit shy when I tried taking a few photographs yet he did a good hopper for me.

Oh yea they have some super delicious salads. The health conscious can now go on a buffet dinner. Pick thise salads and am sure those struggling like myself to create a healthy meal would get a lot of ideas. Now I can stop boring my husband with the same kind of vegetables in his salad bowl.

My starter the red fruit which is called lovi in sl was so sour.

My main course. Just a bit of a few things.

Oh yea the Arabic penne pasta section. They have many designs of pasta with a wide selection of sauces to accompany. I love that pasta jar.

The traditional method in a modern equipment.  Loved those naans. The chef who prepared these naans was so helpful in taking these photos and made sure I got the naan in there on my camera which is why he took the picture. I couldn’t reach that far.

So when a food blogger goes to a buffet this is what she ends up with. Loads of images on food, food and food only.
Eat what you can even though you pay for more than you eat. Usually people serve a lot on everything and waste the food. We all should follow one rule on a buffet which is to taste from everything on the buffet table but do not serve more than what you can taste. People stay hungry and there are many people who struggle and die of hunger.  We can never help everyone but we can stop wasting food.

Waste not, want not

Everything has a limit so does food.
According to me buffets are to help people taste everything but not eat everything.
We can never try out different types of food in a la carte restaurant unlike in a buffet where the price is same whatever you eat and you hardly will be able to eat anything as each order has its limits and own prices.  Buffet meals are for those looking for a different sort of dinning experience while enjoying the variety of food.
So I have developed a policy that I go to the right place that has a variety of options and serves international food. This way I get the chance if exploring food while travelling and discover the different flavors in food from around the world in one place.

So choose wise and enjoy the variety

waking up after 8 to hear the thambili vendor scream on top of his voice "thambili, thambili" is something i missed in dubai. its extreme fun to run up to the gate repeating thambili. this delicios, natural king coconut water is so magical. a straw is all you need to empty the shell. a very healthy drink indeed. very expensive in dubai and sold only in a small quantity. sri lanka is full of king oconuts sold by road side vendors.

well cutting the thambili into half and scraping the fless of by a spoon is fun. we used to throw the empty king coconut shell on the floor so it comes into two pieces. i remmebr the good old days when we used to share a side amongst us. the thambili vendors will cut it for uson request.

curd

the curd vendor who has been travelling in his same old bicycle for the past 25 years in the area we live who sells curd bought from mannar. Its really yummy. Sold in clay pots with a bottle of pure treacle in different sizes of bottles. Ofcourse the bottles they use are wine bottles well cleaned and sterilised. I have plans to get a stock of those treacle when ibget back to dubai

cargils

the elephant house ice cream bike. The music is what gives everyone a time to decide what flavor popsicle we need and I wanted to buy and try all the available flavors not that dubai doesn’t have popsicle but its the joy of buying from a ice cream cycle

kidu

oh I have been wondering how they make these and figured out somehow but its a long process to explain so I will post a seperate article with step by step pictures. Rice served in tgese leaves are really something special

yum kidu

there is a special menu for this meal. It is called kidu rice and served with special side dishes accompanying it. Yes that requires a seperate post and I sure will write it soon with pictures.

koththu

you can get koththu at srilankan restaurants in dubai yet you find it all over in srilanka and I can say there is no shop that doesn’t sell koththu.

banana leafa

banana leaf is some where I want to eat soon as I land in sri lanka on my vacation. They serve the food in banana leaf and the food tastes so delicious. Again you can find food served in a banana leaf at indian restaurants all over dubai but this restaurant in srilanka has a unique menu and taste which adds a bit of srilankan twist.

nethali

nethali karuwadu is what we call it and its basically the tiny dry fish not too salty and can be made into a devil or cooked into a gravy and served with anything like rice, string hoppers, bread and rotti. Enjoying a moment of lanka was I hardly cook this due to the diet I and my hubby follow.

soya

soya srilankan soya meat is very small and comes along with a seasoning. I used to buy the soya meat in dubai during my early stages of pregnancy and craved for the lankan soya its all in the way you cook anyway

The history of Travel and food worldwide

Its been a year since I started blogging on WordPress.
Soon after migrating to dubai I was feeling homesick and lonely while my hubby is at work. The only way I spent my free time was by watching television or chatting with friends.
I am glad I took over blogging which has helped me do something useful.

It all started in July 2012 during summer when my brother in law suggested I start working online for example wordpress programming etc if I know how to, so that I can earn some extra dollars while spending my free time doing some work.

I then remembered I signed up for a WordPress blog in 2010 and decided to start posting my first post as slide show images. My first post was about travel in dubai.
Soon after my first post I started getting a few likes in a couple of days. The very first like for my picture encouraged me to post more.

Then started my love for blogging which has made me a photo addict as I start taking pictures using my mobile phone especially to post on my blog.
I started blogging about a wide range of topics as shoppaholicstraveldiary.wordpress.com.

The early stages of blogging included only photographs. I began researching various blogs and discovering various techniques and features. I also got nyself signed up for a few social media networks and learnt how to keep my readers involved and entertained.
A year and 3 months has elapsed since I started blogging continuously and now I have discovered my passion for travel and food is what I enjoy writing and sharing about.
Having dreamt about being a journalist from the time I completed my ordinary level exams, blogging has helped me get my work published and reach a wide range of audience from around the world. It also has helped me improve my writting skills and now I have decided blogging is what I want to do for the rest of my life.

One year of blogging has taught me-

1) Discovering my interest is the main thing in blogging, until which you can write about any topic in general.

2) To write what am most passionate about.

3) Food and travel blogging needs good quality pictures which people like to see.

4) Always name the blog to suit your niche.

I named my previous blog as shoppaholicstraveldiary.wordpress.com
Because I loved the shopaholics diary book series by sopie kinsella. Another reason why I chose the name shopaholicstraveldiary is I believe we are all shopaholics and I agree myself as one. Reason why I believe am a shopaholic is I buy a variety of books started of with novels and now am addicted to cake decoration books.

Now I’ve changed my blog to travelandfoodworldwide as my blog will focus only on travel and food related posts from around the world.  i have always taken pictures of food and shared with my family back home. I have always wanted to bake, cook and try a variety recipes from around the world and I travel around just to discover food and flavours. I have been a foodie since my childhood. As I mentioned earlier a blog needs a name that will relate to the posts whoch is why i have shifted the blog and I hope my blog gains more viewers in a very short time period.

It has taken a year to gain the experience on blogging and discovering a niche am most passionate about.

I hope my viewers enjoy the new look and the posts to follow.
